REPORTS TO:     Director, Government Affairs & Public Policy

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under supervision, manage projects and events that provide support to the Public Affairs & Strategy Department.  Assist in executing initiatives outlined in the GLI 2020 plan, a comprehensive strategy for regional economic growth, specifically the public policy aspects of the plan.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS:

1)      Track local, state (Frankfort, Indianapolis), and federal legislative activities and compile reports

2)      Develop memos and presentations for various meetings related to Government Affairs

3)      Provide support to Issue Advisory Committees, organize the preparation of materials, and administrative correspondence.

4)      Scheduling and administrative duties

5)      Conduct research, and draft communications related to public policy matters, including action alerts, letters, testimonies, talking points/memos, web and social media content, and event scripts.

6)      With supervision, assist in GLI’s grassroots efforts, investor surveys, and communications with various stakeholders.

7)      Coordinate public policy event programming, including the Capitol Connections & Issues & Influencers event series

8)      Assist in coordinating arrangements and preparation of the DC fly-in, public policy-related events and meetings

9)      Interface occasionally with elected officials and staff at the local, state (Frankfort, Indianapolis), and federal levels

10) Represent GLI at various public meetings and events.  Provide reports/updates to departments

11) Manage and supervise the Government Affairs internship program

12) Perform other duties as assigned

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This work is performed in a moderately noisy office environment, which can include stressful situations.  May be required to drive at night and/or in inclement weather from time to time.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT:

Computer, printer/copier/fax/scanner, telephone, calculator, van or car.

EFFORT:

Sitting for long periods of time at a computer terminal.  Must be able to see, hear and speak. Considerable talking and listening.   Movements frequently and regularly required using the wrists, hands, and or fingers.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in political science, preferably in public policy or public relations required with two (2) years experience in government affairs or a related field.  A combination of education and experience may be substituted when proficiency is demonstrated.

Proficiency in research, writing and public speaking. 

Ability to work within a small, high-powered team and ability to handle multiple tasks, deadlines and priorities and switch gears as deadlines adjust

Possess good judgment and strong work ethic

Ability to maintain confidentiality of any information s/he encounters

Good written and oral communication skills.

Flexible and proactive in taking on assignments and responsibility, and willingness to learn

Ability to proofread

Must maintain a valid driver’s license.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

Interest and aptitude for public policy. The incumbent must have strong computer skills.  Experience with the following types of software and/or Windows based applications is preferred: word processing, databases, Internet, e-mail.  Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint. 

Knowledge of political protocol and event logistics.
